Maplewood Dog Training has been training dogs since 1993. Providing services throughout South Eastern, MA, we strive to provide quality care and instruction to dogs of all ages and their families. All classes and privates are taught using positive reinforcement techniques. There will be no use of electronic or otherwise corrective collars in our classes/privates. Dogs must be in good health and structurally sound to begin training of any kind. Severely over weight dogs, will not be allowed in any MACT agility class. The risks of injury to the dog is just too great in those cases. In those cases we will be happy to direct you to a proper veterinary or canine rehabilitation consultant who can assist you in setting up a proper exercise and diet plan to aid your dog in loosing the added pounds. Agility is a high impact sport, and agility class is not the place for your dog to loose weight. Matter of fact, he may gain weight with the added number of treats you will be giving him, if you're not careful. Any good exercise/weight loss consultant will tell you, you have to start slow with consistency and low impact then build up. Same goes for your dog. Current Rabies Vaccination Documentation (or veterinarian exemption note) is required of dogs over age 6 months, as required by MA State Law. We highly recommend and encourage that any student who wishes to take an agility class with their dog, first have veterinary approval and diagnostic x-rays done of the dog's hips and elbows to ensure that there is no structural reason why their dog should not do agility. We also encourage our students to be proactive and use preventative medicine such as joint supplements (Glycoflex or Cosequin are our favorites), regular chiropractor treatments by a licensed canine chiropractor, acupuncture treatments by a licensed canine acupuncture veterinarian and keep their dog at an appropriate weight. And ounce of prevention is worth more than a mile of regret. Please bring a 6' leash, buckle collar and LOTS of treats to any class/privates. Equipment Foundations, class participants will also need a nonrestrictive harness such as a Premier Sure Fit harness. All classes are limited to 6 students per instructor. Agility Class Descriptions Dog/Handler Teams wishing to enter any MACT Agility class other than Communications, must 1st have a 1/2hr private lesson evaluation at the indoor in Franklin. Cost is $40 and these are offered at certain times on select Tuesdays. You must contact Katrin at katrin@maplewooddog.com if you would like to schedule one. You will not be given a space in any agility class, other than Communications, without this prior evaluation, regardless of previous agility training/classes/titles, etc at other facilities/trainers. We offer 2 types of agility classes- our Core Classes (beginner through competition) and our Special Skills Classes which work on specific skills such as distance or weaves or jumping. Not all classes are offered every session. The "Core Agility Classes" Program has been reworked and the new course offerings will begin in the June 2008 session. Please see the information on the new Agility Program in the below links. |
