MAP Service Dogs, A Path to a New Life... Owner-Trainer ProgramBecause of our small facility, MAP, Inc services its clients mostly through our owner-trainer program. In this program we aid you in finding and training a dog appropriate for your needs. A trainer will meet with you usually bi-weekly teaching you how to train your dog in obedience, public access and service tasks needed to make you and your dog a successful service dog team. We have worked with clients with a wide variety of needs from guide dogs for sight impairments, to hearing dogs, to mobility, psychiatric and autism dogs. By working one on one with you and your dog we are able to tailor the training for exactly your needs. To give you an idea of the time line associated with Owner Training: It takes about 1 year to find the correct dog. The dog is then living with you but in pre service dog training until they have reached the Canine Good Citizen Test level which is approximately one year. Up to this point they are NOT considered part of the MAP service dog program. Once they pass the Canine Good Citizen Test (CGC), they are then reevaluated for the service dog program. If accepted at that point, there is another 6 months to 1 year worth of training before they are ready to take our Service Dog and Public Access Test. |
