I began painting in oils in Summer 2007, when I enrolled in my first art class at the Hunakai Art Studio near my home in Massachusetts. A number of people whose insight I value told me "You need to get a hobby!", so I finally relented and "got a hobby". I'm a dog trainer by trade, not an artist, and that comes through in my subject matter- dogs in all shapes and sizes doing all manner of things. I live with a Cardigan Welsh Corgi and a number of Flat Coated Retrievers, so those breeds were my first to paint. And since have begun to expand to other breeds. I am in the process of a number of paintings loosely called "Doing Work" to show case working dogs. Everything from working in the field retrieving to assisting the disabled to going to ground for rats to herding sheep. I believe that dogs need and love to have jobs, and wanted that to come through in my art. The majority of my paintings are done from photographs. I have yet to master the art of good photography, and take no credit for the wonderful photos I am given permission from their authors to work with. Many of the dogs painted I know personally, and therefore have an image of that dog and his or her personality in my mind. I try very hard to capture not just the physical look of the dog, but also that particular dog's personality, and use photographs that, to me, portray that dog best. Since painting is my hobby, I paint when I have the time and the mood strikes, therefore I start and end projects when life allows. There is no time table so I am able to keep my art as my hobby and fun with no added stress.
