Since I have never trained an 'older' dog as my own in obedience, agility, tracking, herding etc, I've always started with young puppies, I have decided to keep a Training Diary on Monty's progress starting from the day he came home. Monty was born December 5, 2004 and he came to live with me on June 24, 2007 so he was 2 years 6 months old when he began training. Prior to living with me, Monty had attended a puppy kindergarten class as a baby and had ample socialization according to his previous owners, and I totally believe them with all that I've thrown at him! I do know that he lived with 2 German Shepherd Dogs, an alpha female and a male, who were spayed/neutered. Monty was neutered when he was approximately 2 years old, so he had fully matured physically which was great. In early June 2007 the owners contacted breeder Holly Goldman-Craig (Visions Cardigans) saying they could no longer keep Monty and needed to rehome him. Holly took him on a Saturday. The next day, she brought him to a local CPE Agility trial where Kris and Frank Jansen who have 3 Cardis played with him. As far as I know that was his 1st exposure to a large dog event and he did very well. Kris and Frank were very impressed with him and how he responded to this over stimulating atmosphere. A week later, on June 24, 2007, Holly and Leonard drove 2 hours to Ware, MA (Quabbin Reservoir) to give Monty to me and take the bitch of theirs I had been training, Destiny, home as she was in season. Monty was meant to be a short term training project, just till Destiny was out of season, 3 weeks tops. Well he had other ideas and is now here to stay at Maplewood for good.
